As vocalist for Atlanta's own "Eastside Blues Band", Sheffield performed with Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker, T-Bone Walker, Big Joe Turner, George "Harmonica" Smith, and the Legendary Muddy Waters. Sheffield named his daughter "Honey Bee", after one of Muddy's great songs, and Muddy was proud to be Honeybee's Godfather. Bill also opened shows for B.B. King, Albert King, and many other Blues and R&B greats.
Later chosen as singer on Polydor Record's Roy Buchanan, "In the Beginning", Sheffield brought a strong Blues and R&B vocal style to the project, Bill also toured with Roy Buchanan. "In the Beginning" was released in 1974.
In 1985, Sheffield formed "The XL's", and as guitarist/vocalist he established himself as one of Atlanta's premier Blues performers. The XL's toured extensively and became one of the top bands in Atlanta's nightclub scene. The "XL's" released an LP in 1985. They appeared in shows with Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Junior Walker & The All Stars, Average White Band, and many others. The original vinyl, the "XL's" has been re-released as a CD by Black Hat Blues, L.L.C.
In the early 90's, Sheffield left the XL's and began writing and performing his own original songs, which contained roots from vintage Blues, R&B, Rock, and classic Country/Gospel. Sheffield collaborated with Atlanta singer Liane Webb to produce a CD called "Real Time", released in 1997. Several of Sheffield's songs received airplay on radio stations in Atlanta and around the Southeast.
Bill turned his attention back to the original Delta Blues that so influenced his music from the start. Bill performs interpretations of the classic works of Robert Johnson, Blind Willie McTell, Bo Carter, Charley Patton, Blind Blake and many others
